Women's Task Force
"Since the incidence of diabetes and hypertension is rising among Dominican women, a change to an active, healthy lifestyle would have great benefits."
The Women's Health Task Force has been operating for a number of semesters with much success. Once each semester, the task force goes down to the Saturday market in Portsmouth, Dominica, to educate the locals on women's health issues. The focus has been on "The How To" of self-breast examinations, the causes and preventions of STDs and cervical cancer, and the incorporation of safe-sex practices.
The same event will carry on this semester along with a survey to see how many local women are interested in an Introduction to Fitness & Healthy Lifestyle Program. Since the incidence of diabetes and hypertension is high in Dominica, a change to a more active, healthy lifestyle would have great benefits. The Program will permit a bi- or tri-weekly one hour run-speed walk session. During each session, diet (via a weekly journal), weight, BMI and heart rates will be monitored. As well, daily struggles on lifestyle change with methods of overcoming such hurdles will be discussed.
