On behalf of the AMSA student body at Ross University we would like to welcome you. Currently AMSA has over 600 members at Ross University, and many more that have gone on to graduate and become Health Care professionals. AMSA also had the largest membership drive last year, surpassing all other AMSA international medical school chapters. AMSA's goals as an international medical students association are to promote medical education in the didactic and clinical fields to our members, help improve medical access to the community at large, and help unite medical students so we may have one voice to make a positive difference in the medical world.
Here at Ross University we achieve these goals by our many events that are held throughout the year. We have met our education goals by having a Vitals Signs Workshop and other clinical events though out the semester. These events help our students to be more able to understand and perform medical techniques that they will need for the rest of their medical life.
On the community aspect, every semester we hold a health care screening in the town of Portsmouth where, in this current semester, we helped 250 Dominicans with preventative medicine. We are able to do this by isolating high-risk individuals and educating them on disease processes such as Hypertension and Diabetes. In addition, for the past 2 years, AMSA helps to coordinate a research study group with students from a Miami medical school to perform health care screenings in the Carib territory, the lowest socio-economic group on the island. For the first time ever, we were given the opportunity this past February to help at Grotto House, a homeless shelter in the town of Roseau, performing physical exams and taking medical histories on the people that reside at Grotto House. We are looking forward to continue to have the opportunity to repeat this in the up coming semesters. All of our events that lend themselves to patient contact are supervised by a practicing phy sician from campus.
The AMSA chapter here at Ross makes a conscious effort to unite with one voice to take part in the actions that AMSA as a whole tries to enact. At least two Ross AMSA representatives are sent to attend the AMSA National Conferences held three times a year. We have even been fortunate enough to be able to extend our voice as an international medical school with the help of the International Trustee for AMSA, currently a Ross Student.
Ross University AMSA chapter is able to fulfill it goals and help to be a strong guiding force in the Ross community and in the Dominican community at large. We are pleased to say that this would not be at all possible if Ross AMSA did not have the full support from the Administration and, most importantly of all, the students at Ross. Thus, we hope that your joining will enrich us further, so you can help us help others.
